Mike Gordon spent years as a federal prosecutor with the Department of Justice before joining Kelley | Uustal Trial Attorneys, where he uses his extensive trial experience to hold bad actors accountable on behalf of his clients. Senior DOJ officials have described him as “one of the best trial attorneys I’ve encountered during my years of practice” and “a standout trial lawyer…trusted to take the most challenging, high-profile cases.” A defense attorney who had represented more than 400 defendants in federal courts nationwide told him, “Among the AUSAs I’ve faced, you’re easily the best trial lawyer. It’s not close.”
Early in his legal career, Mr. Gordon clerked for two federal judges, in the Southern District of New York and in the Eastern District of New York, gaining insight into how judges evaluate cases, lawyers, and arguments. He then became a state prosecutor with the New York County (Manhattan) District Attorney’s Office, focusing on protecting victims of domestic violence and other assaults.
In 2017, Mr. Gordon moved to Tampa, Florida and joined the Department of Justice as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. During his first five years as a federal prosecutor, he worked in the Violent Crimes and Narcotics Section, investigating, charging, and trying cases against violent street gangs, armed robbery crews, and domestic and international drug trafficking organizations.
Following the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Mr. Gordon was selected to help the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia prosecute cases stemming from the riot. As Senior Trial Counsel for the Capitol Siege Section, he led the prosecutions and conducted the trials against many of the most notorious January 6 defendants, serving as DOJ’s closer in its highest-profile cases and achieving a perfect conviction record.
After two years on that assignment, Mr. Gordon returned to the Tampa U.S. Attorney’s Office and joined the Economic Crimes Section, focusing on white collar fraud, tax crimes, public corruption, and cybercrime. His accomplishments there included securing the indictment of a local businessman whose wealth came from embezzling over $100 million from special needs victims, mainly children, who relied on that money for medical treatment and daily needs.
Mr. Gordon grew up in San Antonio, Texas, the son of a doctor and a psychologist. Despite people predicting from a young age that he’d become a lawyer, he spent his twenties teaching 11th and 12th grade Humanities and coaching basketball at a school in the Washington, D.C. area before deciding, at 30, to change careers and become a lawyer.
He and his wife have two children. On weekends, he plays basketball, pickleball, and Ultimate frisbee, coaches his kids’ sports teams, walks his dogs, experiments with new recipes, and hones his baking skills, working to perfect the chocolate chip cookie.
