Attorney Melissa Medrano of Kelley/Uustal was recently appointed to the Florida Bar’s Standing Committee: the Legal Needs for Children. This committee scrutinizes and guides the legislative process in regards to the legal needs of children across the State of Florida. They also study and relay significant developments in this focused area of practice to other Florida Bar members.

According to the Florida Bar’s website, the “scope and function of the Legal Needs of Children committee is to find ways to implement the recommendations of the Commission on the Legal Needs of Children.” The Commission on the Legal Needs of Children’s released their final report in June 2002. This report outlines specific recommendations for the representation, treatment, and services that are provided to children throughout the legal process. The report also outlines specific recommendations regarding confidentiality and the competency of children, as well as the education and role of the Florida bar in this legal area of practice.
