In the early 1900s, the United States had one of the most progressive tax codes in the world. The idea β the quintessentially American idea β was that the wealthiest Americans enjoyed the benefits of this great country, and so would contribute more to keeping the country safe, secure, and full of opportunity. But something changed; now, βthe wealthiest 400 Americans pay a lower rate than the middle class.β How did we let this happen?
