U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions consumers about possible health risks of a popular dietary supplement.
After tests revealed the presence of anabolic steroids, the FDA is warning consumers to stay away from Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50. Sold as a vitamin B dietary supplement, preliminary lab tests indicated at least two potentially dangerous anabolic steroids–dimethazine and methasterone, a controlled substance. Neither ingredient is listed on the product label.
Howard Sklamberg, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research had this to say about the supplement: “Products marketed as a vitamin but which contain undisclosed steroids pose a real danger to consumers and are illegal.”
The FDA begin investigating Healthy Life Chemistry By Purity First B-50 after it had received 29 adverse incidents associated with the supplement. These reports included serious side effects that are seldom linked to dietary supplements, including fatigue, muscle cramping and pain, as well as elevated cholesterol levels an abnormal liver and thyroid function.
Because the supplement contains anabolic steroids, female users also reported unusual hair growth and amenorrhea (missed periods), while males who used it complained of low testosterone and impotence.
